Dog-Friendly Beaches on the Isle of Wight

From sweeping sandy bays to peaceful and secluded coves tucked beneath chalk cliffs, the Isle of Wight has plenty of coastline to keep you and your Little Spirit curious for days.

While seasonal restrictions apply to selected sections of some of the Island's busiest beaches between 1 May and 30 September, there are still beautiful stretches of coastline where dogs are welcome throughout the year.

Whether you're looking for a long sandy walk, a boardwalk through salty marshes or want to search for sea-glass amongst shingle, here are some of the Isle of Wight's year-round dog-friendly beaches.

Yaverland

Best for: long sandy walks

Car parking available

Toilet facilities available

Dogs are welcome throughout the year on the section of Yaverland east of the car park, beyond the seasonal exclusion zone.

At low tide, the beach opens into an expansive stretch of sand with plenty of space for your Little Spirit to run around. Yaverland is also one of the Island's well-known fossil-hunting areas and sits beneath the dramatic cliffs of Culver Down.

Little Spirit Tip: Check the tide before visiting, as a high tide can leave considerably less beach available for walkies.

Ryde Beach & Appley

Best for: easy access & combining

a walk with a cafe stop

Car parking available

Toilet facilities available

Children's play-park

Although seasonal restrictions apply to sections of Ryde's main seafront, dogs can be walked all throughout the year to the West of Ryde Pier and to the East of Appley tower.

The enormous sandy beach at low tide gives dogs plenty of space, while Ryde's cafes (check out The Dell and Appley Beach Cafe), shops and promenade make this one of the most fun options if you're staying nearby. It's also a great option if you have children with you.

Bear in mind that dogs must be kept on leads on public roads, pavements and verges, including the roads running across parts of Ryde seafront.

Little Spirit Tip: Keep an eye out on the tide, you don't want to get trapped on a sandbank as low-tide shifts into high-tide.

Location: North-East Wight

Seagrove Beach

Best for: peaceful seaside walks

Set between Seaview and St Helens, Seagrove is a very pretty East-coast bay.

Its quieter outer sections remain dog-friendly throughoutt he year, woith stretches of sand appearing at low-tide.

It has a much more relaxed feel than the Island's largr resort beaches, making it a good choice for an unhurried coastal walk.

Location: East Wight

Priory Bay

Best for: secluded walks that make you forget you're in the UK

Priory Bay honestly feels a world away from the Island's busier beaches, and the UK itself. In the summertime, the white sands that back straight onto trees and woodland make it so you could easily fool friends and family if you send them a picture saying you're in the Medditterranean!

Reached on foot through woodland paths, this sheltereed bay has sandy sections at ower tide, trees behind the beach and a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere.

Steephill Cove

Best for: scenery and character

Just along the coast from Ventnor, down a windy, steep road you'll find Steephill Cove - one of the Island's most distinctive little beaches.

Fishing boats, traditional cottages and the sheltered cove give it plenty of personality. Please not access requires a steep walk and the beach itself is relatively compact.

Dogs are permitted but should be well controlled in the confined surroundings. Visit Isle of Wight also advises that dogs remain on leads at all times here.

Location: South-East Wight

Compton Bay

Best for: dramatic scenery, fossils, long walks and sunsets

National Trust car parking available

Seasonal ice-cream and bar vans

Compton Bay is one of the Isle of Wight's best coastlines, backed by open downs and Military Road.

Dogs are welcome throughout the year on the section of beach between Hanover Point and Brook Chine.

There is a seasonal restriction on the section west of Compton Bay car park from 15 May to 15 September. It's always worth double-checking local signage before setting off.

The beach is especially beautiful at low-tide when more sand is exposed. The surrounding downs and coastal path make it easy to combine a beach walk with a longer countryside route that can lead for miles.

Little Spirit tip: Compton can have very strong surf, current and backwash and there are no regular lifeguards, so please take extra care around the water.

Colwell 🐾 Cowes 🐾 East Cowes 🐾 Freshwater Bay 🐾 Gurnard 🐾 Sandown 🐾 Shanklin 🐾 Ryde  🐾 Springvale 🐾 Ventnor 🐾 Yaverland

This does not necessarily mean the whole coastline at each location is closed to dogs.
